MTWTU meets its seafarers in Romania

As part of a joint project between the Marine Transport Workers Union of Ukraine and the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, the MTWTU organized the first meeting with Ukrainian seafarers temporarily staying in Romania. This is an important event, as our goal is to be there for the Union members despite the challenging circumstances they encountered due to the war in Ukraine.

The MTWTU approached the ITF Seafarers’ Trust with such an initiative to support our seafarers wherever they are, and we are very grateful that they understood and supported us.

The event focused on the Union’s work during the war, support for those stuck in Ukraine without the opportunity to travel to work, and support for those forced to leave the country. The Union’s representatives provided legal advice and answered seafarers’ most frequently asked questions regarding their work, employment agreements, and other issues directly related to everyday life on board. Particular attention was paid to mental health issues, which is especially relevant for every Ukrainian in today’s realities.

“Our priority is to support the Union’s seafarers always and everywhere. Regardless of where they are — in Ukraine or abroad — we are always ready to provide them with the necessary assistance and support. Our goal is to ensure that every seafarer knows that they are not alone and that their rights and interests are protected,” said Oleg Grygoriuk, MTWTU Chairman.

We will continue to work on expanding our support and providing the necessary assistance to all Ukrainian seafarers, regardless of where they are.
