New Jobs for Ukrainian Seafarers

Today, on December 3, 2020, the original of the Memorandum between Ukraine and the Republic of Croatia on the mutual recognition of seafarers’ certificates was handed over.

The signing of the document, which was postponed for several years, has become possible today thanks to the fruitful cooperation between the Marine Transport Workers’ Trade Union of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

The memorandum opens up new prospects for Ukrainian seafarers: the certificates of Ukrainian seafarers are now recognized by Croatia as a decent confirmation of their professional training. Potentially, this entails new jobs for our seafarers on the ships flying the Croatian flag.

“For several years our Union has received inquiries from Croatian shipowners willing to hire Ukrainian seafarers on their national-flagged ships. However, the absence of a Memorandum on mutual recognition of certificates hindered the cooperation. Despite the fact that the Croatian fleet is not a large one, their shipowners experience a lack of professional staff. We have also repeatedly raised this issue with our colleagues from the Croatian Seafarers’ Union, we long have been closely working with,” said Oleg Grygoriuk, MTWTU First Vice Chairman.
