Two years ago, the Marine Transport Workers’ Trade Union of Ukraine (MTWTU) and Danish Shipping signed a historic collective agreement that, for the first time, extended to Ukrainian officers and ratings working on vessels of the Danish International Ship Register (DIS).
This milestone was the result of several years of negotiations and marked an important step toward recognizing the professionalism of Ukrainian seafarers and strengthening social partnership. Since then, cooperation between the parties has become an example of balanced social dialogue in the international maritime sector.
In October 2025, the parties successfully completed the first renewal of the agreement, reaffirming their commitment to the principles of fairness, stability, and mutual support even during wartime.
The updated agreement includes a number of significant improvements for Ukrainian seafarers:
- From October 1, 2025, the basic wage rate increased by 4%;
- From October 1, 2026, it increases by an additional 3%, making a total of 7% over two years;
- Death compensation raised from USD 102,208 to USD 116,299;
- Two-watch system compensation increases from USD 280 to USD 300;
- Funeral benefit rises from USD 1,000 to USD 3,500;
- The Day of Defenders of Ukraine is added to the list of public holidays;
- Joint recommendations on cadet scholarships have been agreed upon, with the amount increased to USD 525.
The renewal of the agreement confirmed that the partnership between the MTWTU and Danish Shipping is long-term and productive. Both parties share common values — dignity of work, stability, and the well-being of seafarers working under the Danish flag.
