The Marine Transport Workers‘ Trade Union of Ukraine, together with the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, is implementing its second project: this academic year, 10 sponsored places at the Lithuanian Maritime Academy have been provided for first-year students of the Kherson State Maritime Academy. The project covers the cost of the first year of study at both universities, as well as accommodation at the Academy's campus in Klaipeda.
Ahead of their journey to Lithuania, the cadets who successfully passed the test visited the Union's office. Today they will arrive in Klaipeda with the support of the MTWTU.
It should be reminded that on 1 September 2022, the MTWTU, ITF Seafarers' Trust, the Kherson State Maritime Academy (KSMA) and the Lithuanian Maritime Academy (LMA) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, allowing KSMA cadets to receive European education in Klaipeda, Lithuania. The cadets' educational programme was designed in such a way that they could combine lectures and practical classes at two educational institutions at once and receive two diplomas: Ukrainian and Lithuanian. Currently, with the support of the MTWTU, most of them have already been employed.
“We have a positive experience in our pilot project, so now we are even more confident moving forward,” noted Oleg Grygoriuk, MTWTU Chairman, “Ukrainian cadets will receive a high-quality European education and be in safety, which is the most important part of this project for us as a Union. For us, this is not just maritime education, we strongly believe in the social standards of life that we defend in our country.”
