During these three days of the seminar, more than 150 Ukrainian seafarers have listened sessions about the union movement in Ukraine, the MTWTU and the ITF work, seafarers’ labour rights protection and many other aspects concerning working at sea which should not be neglected.
The MTWTU First Vice Chairman Oleg Grygoriuk told about the activities of the MTWTU, which currently unites 75 thousand marine transport workers, and 45 thousand from them are Ukrainian seafarers. He elaborated on the protection of seafarers' labor rights, international work and social projects.
ITF-Inspector in Estonia Jaanus Kuiv has told the seafarers about the ITF-Inspectorate routine, the CBA main provisions and the seafarers’ claims handling, while Nataliya Yefrimenko, ITF-Inspector in Ukraine, has familiarized the participants with the basic conditions and structure of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006.
Great interest among the attendees was caused by the issues of taxation and pensions for seafarers, as well as discussion of the latest changes in the maritime industry of Ukraine.
Among these, during the seminar all participants got the opportunity to pass a series of training cases on the virtual reality simulator of the company OMS – VR.
Recalling the first UNION WEEK seminar series which was organized by the MTWTU and ITF in 2016, it gathered together 400 participants: seafarers and cadets of maritime educational institutions. After those great success of the first series of seminars at the request of seafarers, the MTWTU held two more UNION WEEK series - both in Russian and in English. In two years, more than a thousand people participated in the UNION WEEK.
